The Institute focuses on four main areas of research: freshwater ecology, aquatic biodiversity and resource conservation, fishery biotechnology and water environment engineering. The aims of the research programmes are to enhance the quality of the water, and to promote sustainable development of fisheries. The institute is trying to make fundamental, strategic and pioneer contributions to water environment protection, aquaculture model optimization and sustainable utilization of aquatic resources.

Conservation Biology of Aquatic Animals Research Group

Baiji.org is working in partnership with IHB's Conservation Biology of Aquatic Research Group to develop best-practice freshwater conservation initiatives for China's Yangtze River. The group studies mainly endangered aquatic animals, such as the baiji, finless porpoise and Indo-pacific humpback dolphin. Their research focuses on animal acoustics, behavioural ecology, mechanisms causing species decline, population dynamics, small population biology, restoration of endangered populations, as well as the reproductive biology of endangered species. The group owns a unique freshwater dolphinarium - the Wuhan Baiji Dolphinarium. Head: Prof./Dr. Wang Ding. Chief Members: Dr Zhang Xianfeng, Zhao Qingzhong, Chen Daoquan, Wang Kexiong and Wei Zhuo.
